‹더 그레잇 커미션›은 총 세 가지의 창작 영역으로 구성되어있다. 더 그레잇 스튜디오, 더 그레잇 스테이지, 그리고 커뮤니티 성격을 의미하는 더 그레잇 커뮤니타스이다.

더 그레잇 스튜디오는 신진 창작가 및 기성 창작가를 재 발굴하여 협력 창작 작업 및 공동 구현을 목표로 한다. 시대적인 삶의 주제 혹은 시대를 반추할 수 있는 개인에 대한 내러티브를 기반으로 다각적인 관점과 접근을 실험적으로 모색한다.

더 그레잇 스테이지는 더 그레잇 커미션의 협력 창작물을 관객에게 소개하는 플랫폼이다. 기획의 주제와 목적에 따른 공간이자 장소로서 역할을 지니고 있으며, 창작물을 보여주는 방식 및 형식에 대한 과정을 유연하고 혁신적인 방향으로 모색한다.

더 그레잇 커뮤니타스는 동시대 예술을 통한 교류를 통해 건강한 공동체 형성을 추구한다. 커뮤니타스라는 어원의 의미를 기반으로 지역적이고 공간적인 것을 너머서 ‘시간’과 ‘공간’안에 함께 존재하고 배움과 공유를 추구하는 교육적 역할과 정서적 회복을 다루는 예술치료의 실천적 접근을 타진한다.

The Great Commission (TGC) believes contemporary art transcends disciplines, geographies, and the presumed limits of its audience. We pursue a practice both precise enough to generate new knowledge in any context and permeable enough to reach where it is least expected. TGC exists because this practice matters beyond the art world—in the full spectrum of conditions that shape life itself.

Mission
◌ Exhibition & Performance Production
TGC commissions and produces exhibitions and performances grounded in the conviction that contemporary art’s core values—individual dignity, shared experience, and transformative potential—require a language that challenges longstanding conventions that have often confined these values.

We realize works that address familiar themes through unfamiliar forms, and explore new territories with forms that disarm and open dialogue. Each project is anchored by a question unique to its moment—one that must be felt before it can be articulated, accumulating meaning over time as part of TGC’s distinctive body of work.

In Practice: TGC’s creative work focuses on one experience: the rediscovery of something within oneself—a mode of thought that confronts what defies language, approached through actionable steps, and extended outward. This is the rigorous and intentional yield of art.

◌ Artistic Research
TGC’s research probes beneath the surface of contemporary life—not its events, but the underlying conditions: how individuals sense, connect, and find meaning within their world. Art remains one of the few modes of inquiry capable of embracing this complexity without oversimplification.

We integrate histories, contexts, and internal logics across artistic disciplines, intersecting them with the social, psychological, cultural, and linguistic forces of the present. The resulting intersections—through collision, affinity, and unexpected overlap—form the theoretical foundations upon which TGC’s creative work is built and documented.

In Practice: The frameworks generated through this research extend beyond our own practice. They are designed to travel across industries, fields, and social contexts, carrying significance beyond the art world. Our goal is to establish new critical ground for contemporary art: foundations that move beyond inherited canons toward a deeper understanding of why art remains vital and for whom.

TGC’s educational initiatives translate the creative language and methodologies developed through our productions and research to those who need them most. For us, education is not a curriculum or institution—it is what emerges when the heart of our practice meets the realities of lived experience.

In Practice: Through partnerships with institutions, schools, arts organizations, and volunteer networks, TGC identifies spaces beyond the reach of existing systems. Working with individuals navigating childcare, migration, and recovery from trauma, we center creative engagement and guided inquiry—not to measure outcomes, but to foster self-directed ways of living and to nurture a sense of personal responsibility that originates from within.

‹더 그레잇 컬렉션›은 옛 신사장 여관이 있던 곳에 위치한 오래된 양옥 이층집 거실을 전시공간으로 사용하며 향후 공간적인 서사가 가능한 유휴공간들을 탐색해나가며 다양한 창작가들이 교류하고, 소통을 도모하며, 협업을 모색하는 사랑방이자 커뮤니티 공간으로 기능한다.

Some collections are built from what is owned. This one is built from what is encountered — and what is worth keeping.

The Great Collection is a curatorial and archival practice: a living record of artistic work, process, and exchange that exists outside institutional frameworks. It is independent from TGC's commissions, but rooted in the same sensibility — the belief that what contemporary art produces in the making is as significant as what it produces as a finished work.

It finds and activates found and latent spaces — rooms with prior lives, buildings mid-transition — and brings into them artists, subjects, and genres that existing exhibition contexts have yet to claim. Undiscovered practices are given room before they are given a stage. Creative processes are shown before they are resolved. What accumulates over time is not a permanent collection but a body of encounters: documented, held, and made available as a resource for those who come after.

The Great Collection does not run on a schedule. It opens when the right space presents itself, and it remains — in archive, in record, in the community it has made — after the space is gone.
