Performance Introduction

«he ran to» is a live performance in four scenes based on the story of four individuals’ lives. Presented in an exhibition setting, this performance not only presents a visual component but also enhances the audience experience through sound and light engineering.

Each scene tells the story of one human being’s life through the person’s pain, joy, restoration, and celebration. The celebration scene includes the final resolution of the pain that the artist experienced over the course of time. The highs and lows of the artist's’ life are expressed through words as well as through a sensory experience.

The scenes will take place in the three floors of the gallery and in the stage plaza. These are the four scenes: scene one, “Crying out in the Wilderness,” scene two, “Encountering Love,” scene three, “Your Restoration,” and the final scene “Celebration for Tomorrow.”

These four scenes are based on distinct performance styles. Life’s highs and lows will be expressed through sound, video, scenery, and live performances. Using unconventional means to express their experiences in life, the artist will communicate what he or she felt in those experiences, in order that the audience may relate to the artist.

The concept of “narrative” was drawn from Alasdair Macintyre‘s After Virtue. There are many principles of beliefs that one holds in life, many “ism”s, but there are limits to these perspectives. We often ask ourselves, why do people see matters the way that they do? Are their perspectives really applicable to our own lives? An alternative way to view life is through a narrative lens.

Human beings are storytelling beings. We live our lives as narrative quests. “I can only answer the question ‘What am I to do?’ if I can answer the prior question ‘Of what story or stories do I find myself a part?’” ··· “For I am never able to seek for the good or exercise the virtues only qua individual.” I can make sense of the narrative of my life only by coming to terms with the stories in which I find myself.
— reference from Sandel, Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?

Contemporary art, by definition, is an expression of abstract concepts through various artistic means. There are barriers that keep one from understanding certain concepts in contemporary art. This conclusion is not drawn from a particular artwork or artist, but rather agreed upon by the general audience. Maybe the complexity of contemporary art in itself is what can cause distance between the artist and the audience?

This exhibition is presented in a “live performance” concept in order to overcome the barrier for the general audience to understand and experience contemporary art. Live performance was birthed through this narrative concept so that the audience can tangibly understand and experience what the artist is expressing.

This barrier that exists between the general audience is not actually between the art or the artist that created it, but it can be in the complexity of the intended message that the artist tries to convey. The audience therefore can feel distant from “contemporary art.” This distance between the artist and audience can be a “space” or a platform for the artist and the audience to communicate.

Can the audience relate to the artist through their performance? Is it possible for the artist to dialogue with the audience?

«He Ran To» is a live exhibition, a presentation that is a non-traditional white cube form. The scenes in themselves are narrative stories shared within the space of the performance of the artist’s experiences.

The importance of understanding ‘my story’ lies in the following fact. As we ask ourselves who we are, why we think the way we do, and how we come to this point in our lives, we come to want to share our life experiences with others. At times, when we go through these questions, we get to see how one person’s life story closely relates to someone else. It can also become a time to confront and reflect upon ourselves. Although the experiences in each of our lives can often seem just ordinary, when they are expressed as a coherent narrative, each individual’s uniqueness is revealed.

Exhibition Introduction

The title of this live exhibition «he ran to» comes from a narrative that could be found in the Bible; the prodigal son. This famous story is about a second son from a rich family who left his home and wandered, lived a dissolute life and came back home empty-handed. When he comes back home, his father runs to his son and kisses him and welcomes him back home.

The point of this exhibition is not the content of the story itself but the very existence of “him.” “He” can be portrayed as the one we can go to when we are tired and want to be comforted, a place of rest that we can visit anytime, an energy that could strengthen us when we want ourselves to be different.
When we observe human emotions, we realize that whether from physical, spiritual, or psychological reasons, the course of life is an endless cycle of joy, sadness and patience. These emotions and state of mind have been generalized and expressed in only limited ways.

The exhibition «He Ran To» can be thought of as a type of ephemeral art — an art that fills our surroundings but quickly fades away. Ephemeral art does not focus on its physicality, permanence, and eternity as in traditional art. Instead, it remains in our mind as a different story because the art disappears from our eyes so quickly.

When we take a deeper look, the subtle changes in emotions and its impact can start as a small story, but it can be experienced through the scene, space, temperature, energy, sound, and lights.

The live performance will run each week with one performance on weekdays and two performances on Saturday. For the performances on Saturdays, a four-act play will be performed for a duration of 45 minutes. The individual acts on each floor are 10 minutes long. From Tuesday through Friday each week, there will be a solo performance showcasing each participating artist’s unique interpretation. There also will be a talk with artist and curator sharing the different stages of creating these acts.

When there are no performances, there are exhibitions based on scenarios such as sounds, visual and space installations, which will invite the audience to participate in the exhibition as a complement to the live performances. The experience they get to have in the exhibition environment can be something each of them can later reflect upon, effectively creating a form of dialogue between them and the surroundings.
