더 그레잇 컬렉션은 이수진 개인전 «불안에 맞서는 기술»을 통해 동시대가 고민하는 ‘불안’에 대한 본질과 심리를 탁월하게 묘사한 신작 회화들을 선보입니다.

실로 공포영화의 향유는 영화 그 자체의 서사보다 잠시의 몰입과 과도한 감정의 증폭을 통해 현실감을 상실시키는 대중 매체로 기능합니다. 이 같은 현상은 우리의 걱정 혹은 두려움으로 점철된 형용할 수 없는 불안을 반추하고, 동시에 사회적인 불안감의 비가시적인 결과로도 볼 수 있습니다.

작가 이수진은 그런 심리에서 비롯된 공포영화의 장면적 서사들을 통해 개인의 불안을 관찰했습니다. 영화 속 장면과 그 일부일지 모르는 풍경, 그리고 이를 목도한 시선의 연합으로 서술된 회화적 장면은 궁극적으로 기억, 인상, 시·지각에 따른 어떤 절묘한 평면적 행위를 이루어냅니다.

“불안하거나 두려운, 잘 알지 못하는 대상과 상황을 대할 때엔 그것에 이름을 붙이거나 관찰하고 분석하기 시작한다. 그렇게 하면 완벽하게 극복하지는 못하더라도 어느 정도 받아들일 수 있게 된다. 나에게 회화는 이해를 위한 ‘도구’(기술 혹은 무기)인 것 같다.”

작가는 정면성을 드러내는 회화를 주요하게 다루며, 우리 주변에서 경험하는 일련의 사건을 장면적으로 해석해왔습니다. 특히 작은 크기의 캔버스에 강박적으로 드러나는 작가의 빈틈없는 스트로크는 정제된 회화 표면을 만들며 객관적인 관점을 운용하고, 촉각적인 리얼리티를 상기시킵니다.

이수진 개인전 «불안에 맞서는 기술»은 작가의 시선에 따른 일상적 찰나가 하나의 ‘비일상적인 심리적 풍경’이 되고, 나아가 그 과정에서 발현되는 두려움과 호기심으로 점철된 낯선 경험이 우리를 공포의 일루전으로부터 자유롭게 하는 일련의 도전이 될 수 있기를 희망합니다.

The Great Collection is delighted to announce Sujin Lee’s solo exhibition «The Way to Defeat Fear» in Seoul. This exhibition will introduce Lee’s new oil painting series that excellently depicts a psychology and an essence of our fear in life.

Today, horror movies are used for an entertaining purpose of isolating us into fake reality through emotional extreme or impulse. This phenomenon reflects our indescribable fear that is incorporated with our everyday anxieties and concerns. Ultimately, the phenomenon could be seen as a shadow of consequences from this societal fear of current affairs.

Sujin Lee has observed the psychological root of our fear through various scenes of narratives in horror movies. The painting images of popular movie scenes (e.g., landscapes right before disaster, a historically significant scene like Stanley Kubrick) and our perceptions come together to eventually bring us to imagine certain illusions from a particular movie scene.

Lee has pursued a frontal style of painting that includes our everyday life scene or routine. Her signature compulsive strokes immediately transform paintings into unusual or peculiar stories and lead us to discover exquisiteness of her eyes to see the world and even to experience an untouchable imagination.

The Way to Defeat Fear represents how this challenge of painting impacts our unknown fear and turns into an excitement for us. Moreover, it hopes to influence us to break through the illusion of fear that makes us timid in our lives.

이수진은 국민대학교 회화과 및 동 대학원 회화전공을 졸업했습니다. 대표 전시 이력으로는 2017년 개인전 «Night Walker: 밤의 산책자» 인스턴트루프, 및 2019년 그룹 전 «삼각의 영역» 플랫폼엘, 2014년 그룹전 «3인의 목격자»신한 갤러리 등 다수가 있습니다.

Sujin Lee graduated from Kookmin University with BFA and MFA in painting. She participated in solo exhibition «Night Walker» (Instant Loop, 2017) and in group exhibitions «Triangular Zone» (Platform L Contemporary Art Center, 2019) and «Three Observers» (Shinhan Gallery, 2014).
