더 그레잇 컬렉션은 유럽 미술계가 주목한 작가 신봉철을 소개한다. 이번 개인전 <위로의 시선>은 신봉철이 오랫동안 탐구해온 빛과 유리의 본질을 부조, 평면, 조각을 아우르는 매체로 선보인다. 유리의 매체적 특징에 따른 빛의 직관성을 강조하는 이번 전시는 빛이 밝히는 위로의 감흥에 집중했다.

특히 매체의 양가적 특징 곧, 연약하지만 견고하고, 아름답지만 때로는 날카로우며, 공간을 물리적으로 분리하지만 환영적으로 연합하도록 하는 유리, 빛, 공간에 따른 질감과 물성을 십분 활용했다. 각 유리 사이에 섬세하게 조성된 색채의 막에 따라 빛이 반사되는 큐브 및 스트라이프 설치 시리즈, 캔버스 위에 유리를 부조하여 그림자를 작품으로 드러내는 평면작품, 그리고 부서진 유리조각을 문학적인 메시지로 담은 대표작품들이 참여한다.
신봉철 개인전 <위로의 시선>은 빛의 근원성을 추구하며 궁극의 아름다움이 드러나는 가치들에 대해 환기한다. 이는 단순히 시각적 미학을 드러내는 것뿐만 아니라 관객들이 이를 통해 몰입하고, 감동하며 정서적으로 선한 것으로부터 발견하는 가치 있는 아름다움을 타진해보고자 했다.

The Great Collection is pleased to present Bongchull Shin,an artist based in Berlin, Germany, and internationally renowned in Europe. The solo exhibition of Bongchull Shin’s Comforting Gaze presents the relationship of glass and lighting as the artistic language between the tangible and the spiritual. Shin has been investigating how the glass as both material and invisible has touched the heart of the viewer through this exhibition during the pandemic. Included in this three-part series is a cube series that contains white glass and colored film, a strip-shaped glass installation frame, canvas-based glass-relief, and broken-glass pieces inspired by popular quotes or music lyrics to reflect current culture. This glasses-based installation is presented with natural sunlight. By concentrating on the medium of light and the resulting colorful reflections, Shin alludes to his affinity for the artistic impressionism of early modernism. Comforting Gaze introduces the root of light is perhaps connected with the truth and eventually reveals the value of righteousness in life. Each series of glass installations not only offers visible beauty but also leads viewers to experience invisible beauty.

신봉철은 독일을 기반으로 활동 중이며 유리를 매체 및 작품언어로 ‘빛의 예술을 추구해왔다. 벽면의 부조, 조각, 평면 등의 방식으로 진화하며 창문과 인공조명에서 발산된 빛은 작품을 통과해 방향에 따라 시시각각 다른 빛의 궤적을 만드는 것이 특징이다. 스테인드글라스를 시작으로 색유리를 주요하게 다루며 자연성을 활용한 유리 설치 작업에 탁월하다. 주요 개인전으로 <빛의 숨결> 2021 갤러리 마르티나 카이저, <신봉철 개인전> 2020 갤러리 소네보, 몰디브 2019 <빛의 지도> 소더비 뮌헨, 2018 <빛의 무게> 갤러리 타닛 뮌헨 등 10여 회가 있다. 그 외 대표 그룹전으로 <빛으로 그리는 신세계> 2021 청주시립미술관, 2020 발드 미술관 즈비젤, 2019 <프리즘 판타지> 파라다이스 아트스페이스 인천, 2018 화이트 박스 센터, 베이징 등 총 40여회의 전시가 있다.

Bongchull Shin is based in Germany and uses glass installed with light as an artistic language. Lightness has been his crucial direction to pursue spirituality within art. That intangible but powerful experience of invisible materials such as light, sound, and glass creates a realm of art.
