더 그레잇 컬렉션은 올해 마지막 전시로 조각가 이은우의 개인전 <뒹굴뒹굴>을 개최한다. 일련의 사물에 인격성을 목도할 수 있는 작가의 신작들은 스킬 자수 연작 및 나무 부조(Relief), 드로잉 시리즈, 그리고 전시장 마당의 장소 특정적 설치 작품으로 소개될 예정이다.

전시 제목 <뒹굴뒹굴>은 황신혜 밴드 1집 ‘만병통치’에 등장한 노래와 동명이다. 초대가수 백현일이 객원으로 참여한 장난스러운 음색이 특징이다.

흡사 가사에서 발휘되는 정서는 특정한 메시지 라기보다 익살스러운 운율과 리듬이 무심코 드러내는 아마추어리즘, 즉 수단이나 이익과는 사뭇 먼 거리에 빈 말속에서 연상되는 일련의 윤곽이다. 그것이 생성하는 찌질 하지만 동시에 본질적인 삶의 현타와 같은 정서는 무심한듯 일상을 관통한다.

이번 전시의 주요 참여작품들을 살펴보면 기존에 작가의 작품에서 드물게 목도되었던(실상 본격적으로 드러나지 않았던)자의성과 자율성을 포용한다. 먼저 스킬 자수(Latch Hook)작업은 구현을 위해 무수한 반복과 인내를 요하는 결과에 반하는 즉흥적인 크레파스 드로잉처럼 예측이 불가한 행위의 결과로 시작, 그 출발이 무색할 만큼 꼼꼼하고 섬세한 반복행위를 거쳐 완성된다. 여기서 발생하는 모종의 아이러니는 일련의 노동에 대한 순수함과 기만이 등가적으로 드러나 펑키 한 제스처의 외양으로 관객에게 인상한다.
순수 조각의 재료인 나무를 부조(Relief)한 작업은 기하학적 개체들이 연합하고, 진화하여 전시 공간의 시점을 다층적으로 변모시켰다. 프레임, 규격, 나아가 그것이 형성하는 구조는 공간에 투사되는 타블로와 같이 기능한다. 뿐만 아니라 이번 전시를 통해 본격적으로 선보이는 30여점의 드로잉 시리즈는 일명 ‘그리기’라 일컫는다. 중력에서 부유하는 자유로운 드로잉의 행위를 상기하는 이들은 색연필과 시트지로 제작하여 사각형, 직각, 45도로부터 출발 발생하는 이미지로 귀결되었다. 작가는 드로잉의 말미에 여느 실내공간, 집 혹은 가구, 평범한 물건을 닮은 무엇인가를 발견한다고 하는데 이는 일상과 미술 그리고 노동의 경계에서 도모되는 필연적인 관계성을 암시한다.
이번 전시 <뒹굴뒹굴>은 작가 이은우가 탐구해왔던 ‘애매’와 ‘모호’ 사이에 관념에서 조형적 정체성을 모색한다. 이는 기존의 조형의 질서 혹은 조형의 역사의 계보와는 다른 식견과 정서를 지닐 터, 궁극적으로 동시대가 지니는 현상과 불특정한 정의를 횡단하는 작가적 정체성의 본질을 타진하고자 했다.

The Great Collection is delighted to introduce Eunu Lee’s solo exhibition Rolling and Rolling as TGC’s final exhibition of 2021. Lee’s exhibition presents everyday objects of life in a way that suggests a personality, giving them character and a soul. These objects include a new series of latch hook crafts, wooden reliefs and drawings, as well as a special, site-specific outdoor installation. The exhibition title, Rolling and Rolling, comes from an indie pop song from the Hwang Shin-Hye Band’s 1st album. The lyrics reveal an idler's daily routine in a hysterical and humorous way. It reminds us of amateurism as a socially marginalized phenomenon, especially through the work of art as blue-collar labor.
This series shows the dual aspects of high-end art as fine craft while at the same time embodying a funky street soul. Lee’s new work includes colorful latch hooks using various yarns to create tacky, useless objects. It may seem like a thousand stitches would be needed to complete them, but ironically, they started from improvised spray painting. Lee demonstrates that the value of both spontaneous action and dedicated diligence might be the same. The other wooden framed sculptures are a relief series of Lee’s signature art style. Organically gathered, each wooden piece is positioned at a different angle of view into the gallery space. Lastly, the show includes the thirty grid-paper based drawing series called “gravity drawing,” suggesting that the images of the drawings are floating in gravity in our daily lives. They can project our imagination or mind through furniture, house interiors or common life objects. Eunu Lee’s exhibition Rolling and Rolling will navigate between the uncertainty and the uncategorized identity of what each object was created for.

이은우는 사물이 담고 있는 관념적인 의미보다 그 외피에 관심으로 어떤 사실들을 작업적으로 탐구해왔다. 이는 일련의 경계에서 존재하는 역사의 순간이자, 오고 가는 양식이며, 조각과 사물의 물질성에 따른 버내큘러를 상기한다.

Eunu Lee is based in Seoul. Lee has been more focused on exploring the outside of things, rather than the inside. This attitude of work reminds us of the realm where we are surrounded by the history, cultural style, and vernacularity of this time. Lee’s selected solo exhibitions include Pairs at Songeun Art Space, Tall, Flat, Hung at Art Sonje Project Space, The Matter of Objects at Gallery Factory, and Event Horizon at Alternative Space Loop. Selected group exhibitions include Herzog & de Meuron: Exploring SongEun Art Space, Welcome Back at Space Isu, and The Expanded Manual at Nam Seoul Museum of Art, among others. Lee’s works have been collected by the Seoul Museum of Art, National Bank Korea, and the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art.
