Shin Min : Semi
2022. 9. 3 – 10. 15
The Great Collection proudly presents artist SHIN Min’s solo exhibition semi: 世美 on September 3.
The exhibition title "Semi" is an English nickname commonly used by franchise workers in metropolitan areas.
Shin took into consideration the area in which the exhibition space is located and the people who might exist there as invisible workers.
“Semi” has gradually expanded to refer to the various and specific roles of working people with nicknames on their chests in the offices surrounding the exhibition space, between heavy buildings in the city center, and in small, unknown, temporary offices.
There are countless "Semi" around us who are in an unstable employment environment but keep their will to live despite daily challenges.
The reality of the jobs in a city for those in low-wage, high-intensity service jobs reflects society; it hasn’t improved much despite the GDP improving in the last few decades.
Shin uses various collected materials from daily life for her sculptures and drawings, such as craft paper, clay, used paper bags, and banners used in protests.
The exhibition Semi: 世美 introduces the artist’s newest works: small workers cast in paper from clay forms with their faces drawn on in colored pencil or crayons.
The figures of young workers illustrate people in their 20s and 30s – rebellious characters who don’t want to fit the world’s standards.
Shin’s signature crafting of paper sculptures started from her part-time work at McDonald’s, a franchise famous for its insanely effective labor control.
Her initial interest came from her personal experiences of how the corporation hires workers with low income and high efficiency to boost their profits; this is evident in the McJob sculptures, made from sacks of McDonald’s french fries.
The sacks of french fries and the addictiveness and inescapableness of the fries’ taste is a perfect metaphor for my generation who can’t escape from poverty although they are working for the world’s largest corporations. This series has gained a lot of social, political, and media attention in Korea.
In addition, the lonely reality of single-person households is revealed through sculptures of cats, a thing which can offer support for the "Semi" after a tiring day.
The image of cats can represent how the person lives because a pet becomes like its owner.
Once the audience enters the exhibition, they will see cat sculptures spread across the attic, stairs, and floors of the exhibition, a space that had long been used as homes.
Other new collage drawings show the conversion of nicknames, which are affectionately written on objects such as messages and notes that share each other's joys and sorrows in the working environment. This evokes the shared emotions of anonymous "Semi" who are engaged in an unspecified number of service industries.
We may all have forgotten the days when we were still Semi, when we lived Semi. Many Semi may continue to live a hard life next to us.
This exhibition sheds light on their struggle, and we want to support the pure solidarity of all semis that pass through this time.
