The Great Collection proudly presents Junhyun Bae’s solo exhibition PROPHÈTES as the final exhibition of our gallery space in Sinsa. The exhibition, titled PROPHÈTES, will introduce the meaning of faith in human life today through a series of twenty new paintings. The new series incorporates ancient Catholic images while capture it moments of daily life in the modern day. The images include both the extreme shadow and the light of faith that reflect human psychology, desire, and belief in multiple levels of thought.

Bae’s pursuit of the meaning of truth in this series of paintings is seen through his use of real and fake news collages, National Geographic documentary film visuals, and religious symbols. Having grown up as a pastor’s kid, he was surrounded by religious images and rituals. However, he has struggled to understand the value of faith and how it applies to his daily life outside the traditions of his upbringing.

The highlights of this exhibition’s paintings include an image showing the contradiction of what it means to be a real martyr by juxtaposing a classical Greek bust and a popular Japanese animation figurehead. In another work, the artist transforms the eyes of an unnamed ancient Catholic saint into the image of a flower paralyzed with thin, short wooden vines. This imagery suggests that truth might be found beyond what can be seen, through the pain of seeing with both the eyes and the heart.

PROPHÈTES, as the final exhibition of The Great Collection’s Sinsa location, is a fitting reflection on the path The Great Collection has striven to take to reveal the core values of life for all generations despite their different customs, beliefs, and lifestyles.
For his solo exhibition, PROPHÈTES, Junhyun Bae experimented with his long-term figurative painting style in order to incorporate the abstraction of visual symbols into the language of his paintings. This juxtaposition of images presents the final pursuit of faith. This approach reveals his awareness to navigate the undefined or unspoken truth that exists through all generations.
