Sohyun Moon : Mockup
2022. 5. 7 - 6. 11.
The Great Collection is proud to present Sohyun Moon’s solo exhibition Mockup.
Moon has been focused on attempting to discover the core of virtue throughout the human appetite and sensible studies within photography, video, and site-specific media mapping.
This exhibition will introduce a new work series and live performances during the exhibition schedule.
The title Mockup refers to the unfinished, imperfect state of work, especially as it contains the trial and error of a work in process.
It searches to ascertain Moon’s artistic identity as an open attitude. That vague thing could be a possibility of art rather than an unknown question.
The body can be anything but nothing. We do not know how long it has existed, but it could be born anywhere and spread everywhere.
It could be an audience, actor, and writer. It is a man, woman, or child. It is the beginning and ending.
The body never is left, as it could go as an individual and couple.
This surrealist poem by Paul Éluard in the 19th century influenced Moon to reinvent what is the final status of the ‘body’ (the result of work).
It is implied, not tangible, so it can be ethereal. But it could be interpreted as multiple possibilities, including extended time, space, and spiritual awakening.
The exhibition is composed of a black and white photography series on the ground floor.
It can be seen at first glance as a luxury interior design view; however, once we get a closer look, that uncanny, peculiar image draws us to sense something else.
One of the photographs, titled Bathroom: The Portrait of Spa Masseuse, illustrates the person who has a hurting heart as a classical painting in an elegant bathroom.
It captures black comedy with a comparison between the literal title and the image.
On the second floor of the gallery is a photography and video projection that make up the Greek Museum series.
This photography has various mythologies, heroes, and idols, but their faces are covered in some shadow or mismatched collage of random body images.
It portrays the esteemed museum pedestal as a humorous, twisted, and contemporary perspective.
Moon’s solo Mockup emphasizes the reality in our minds by representing the idealism that everyone desires in this world.
Ultimately it reveals this idealism has only existed in our thoughts.
Only once we have faced this reality might it be possible to realize this idealism isn’t happening in our lives.
