더 그레잇 컬렉션은 2023년 7월 29일 토요일 이성희 개인전 을 개막한다. 전시 제목 ‘페이퍼 아키텍처’는 종이와 모형을 통해 도전적인 구현을 제안하는 사람을 일컽는다.

이성희 개인전은 ‘페이퍼 아키텍처’로 불리는 이들처럼 상식과 보편을 뛰어넘는 생각가치를 실천하고, 그 가능성을 모색하는 진보적인 태도를 신작 드로잉 시리즈, 장소특정적 설치 작품, 영상 및 사운드 아카이브를 통해 소개한다.

현재 독일 뮌헨에 머물며 작업중인 작가 이성희는 건축을 전공, 공간과 환경 나아가 그것이 인간의 생활과 연관되는 접점과 현상 속에서 발생하는 삶의 본질적인 측면에 주목해왔다. 특히 상상과 현실, 그 사이에 실현가능성이 부재한 건축을 지어가는 과정을 다양한 개념적 접근으로 구현해왔다. 이는 단순히 집 혹은 건물이기 보다 생각의 구조로서 욕망본질에 대한 순전한 접근을 기록한다.

이번 전시의 대표적인 신작, 드로잉 시리즈는 연결, 환대, 현존에 욕망을 시적이고도 철학적 유희의 접근으로 풀어냈다. 풍선을 소재로 한 50여점의 드로잉 및 아카이브는 뜨고자하며 동시에 가라않으려는 중력을 상징하며, 매일의 생활에서 겪는 인생의 높고 낮음을 상기한다.

“풍선이라는 꿈에 우리가 연결되어 삶을 띄워주기도 하지만 동시에 땅에 발을 못붙이게 하기도 하잖아요. 우리가 부르는 꿈과 이상을 긍정이나 부정으로 나눌수 있을까요?”
이성희 작가의 언급과 같이 그의 작품은 거대하고 무거운 삶의 희로애락을 담백하고 산뜻한 감각으로 풀어냈다.

뿐만아니라 실험음악을 다루는 뮤지션 한동훈과 협업으로 구현한 설치작품 ‘Poem 230’ 는 시가 채우는 공간을 은유하여 전시장 다락을 무의식의 장소로 치환. 현실과 꿈 사이의 원초성을 나타냈다. 풍선의 시선에서 보일만한 뮌헨의 풍경들, 심장박동과도 같은 리드믹하고 몽환적인 사운드의 조화는 우리가 지니고 있지만 의식하지 못하는 것들을 환기한다.

The Great Collection proudly presents Sunghee Lee’s solo exhibition Paper Architecture, on July 29th. The exhibition title refers to a frontier that challenges convention through the use of paper-based and other experimental models.

Sunghee Lee’s solo exhibition attempts to subvert current social norms using historical paper architecture. Lee creates new drawing series, site-specific installations, and sound and media archives to explore new perspectives.

Lee has been searching to understand core values through the relationship between ecological architecture, urban environment, and human life. Lee especially seeks to explore the unexplainable connection between imagination and reality, believing that our core values may be found in our unconscious human need to create. The impact of this can be seen in the construction of a home as not only a space of living for our bodies but also for our souls. Lee’s description of the artwork as paper architecture implies both a physical and psychological creation.

The highlight of this new drawing series reveals both a humorous and philosophical approach to the subject, displaying the simple reactions of a person playfully interacting with invisible things such as air, energy, and sound. As an illustration of our daily emotional rollercoaster, the artwork reminds us of the gravity of life in a light and easily approachable way, rather than through a heavy narrative.

A hidden spot on the second floor of the gallery space reveals another installation exclusive to this exhibition. The installation features Han, an experimental musician who designed the sound for Lee’s video and giant balloon installation. This collaboration completely transforms the space into a timeless zone where viewers can experience reality and dreams from the perspective of a balloon floating in the sky. Repeated rhythmic sounds recall a heartbeat, reinforcing the balloon man as an abstract form of a human.

이성희는 현재 독일 뮌헨에 머물며 작업중인 작가 이성희는 건축을 전공, 공간과 환경 나아가 그것이 인간의 생활과 연관되는 접점과 현상 속에서 발생하는 삶의 본질적인 측면에 주목해왔다. 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과를 졸업하고, 경기대학교 건축대학원 건축설계학과에서 수학했다.

주요 전시 이력으로는 <산과 사랑에 빠지다> Gallery 126, 서울; ,뮌헨; <상상도시 프로젝트> with 플라잉시티, 대안공간 루프, 서울; 및 아일랜드 댄스시어터 & 나우 무용단 댄스 퍼포먼스 무대, 서울, 더블린, 뉴욕 3개국 순회공연 등이 있으며, 건축프로젝트로는 한평공원 설계, <노둣돌>에서 생태건축연구에 참여한바 있다.

Sunghee Lee currently lives and works in Munich, Germany. She received an MA in ecological architecture at Kyunggi University and a BFA in visual art from the Korean National University of Arts. Selected exhibitions include Affection of Mountain, Gallery 126, Seoul; Domagk Atelier Open Studio, Munich; Imaginative City Project with Flying City, Art Space Loop, Seoul; and Under the Roof & Under the Roof, Dance Theatre Ireland & Now Dance Theater touring performance. Architecture projects include Han-Pyung Park and researching of Nodutdol among many others.
